During his residency training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Patterson received extensive training and experience in all types of anesthesia and pain and anxiety control. That training included anesthesia for all types of hospital surgeries (except open heart procedures) during rotations as an anesthesia resident at University Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The program also included extensive training in anesthesia for outpatient surgeries at the Ohio State University, College of Dentistry.
During the first 25 years of his practice in Chillicothe, he had privileges in both surgery and anesthesia at Adena Medical Center. With over 35 years of experience since initial training, he is very competent and comfortable managing any anesthesia for both children and adults.
The practice offers a complete range of anesthesia care from just numbing the surgery site with local anesthesia, to light (conscious) IV sedation coupled with local anesthesia, to deep (barely conscious) IV sedation coupled with local anesthesia, to complete (unconscious) general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia to be used is decided on an individual basis depending on the health, size, age, and medical condition of patient and the surgery to be accomplished.
These services are provided in a setting with normal operating room equipment and monitors. Dr. Patterson is licensed for the provision of general anesthesia and the facility is licensed and periodically evaluated by the state of Ohio for the practice of surgery during anesthesia. The staff members are well trained and undergo recurrent training in emergency procedures a minimum of twice a year.
